SUMMARY:

YouTube offers a vast world of independent animation for voice actors to practice their skills in Voiceovers, which are crucial production techniques in various industries. They enhance the accessibility of foreign-language videos through dubbing, automated dialogue replacement {ADR}, and voice-overs. Voice actors play a significant role in various industries, including announcing work, audiobooks, video gaming, e-learning, trailers, promos, and biographical movies. They can be trained to narrate their books or contribute to well-known works. Voice acting opportunities are also available in corporate and educational sectors, with tools for human resources and university courses. In the biography genre, voice actors can narrate the lives of politicians and celebrities, making them suitable for biographical movies.

If you want to know in detail about nineteen types of Voiceover, read them down below. I have an activity after every lesson at the end of the page, so kindly try that. I assure you, they are not boring, rather they will be exciting and fun.

What is VOICEOVER?

An outsider's voice is recorded for a voice-over, a production technique that is frequently used to narrate stories or provide informational explanations. However, no one can see the voice. The addition of the voice in addition to the already present story is the essential element. Television, film, theater, radio, and other mediums, it is frequently read aloud by a voice actor from a script. In promotional movie trailers, when a voice explains the major aspects of an upcoming film to draw viewers in, voice-overs may be used the most frequently and are best known for. Nevertheless, voiceovers can also be heard in documentaries, news stories, video games, event announcements, tourist attractions, ads, and other presentations. Voice is also known as off-camera or off-stage commentary.

Narration-based voiceovers and non-narrated voiceovers are the two main categories. When a story is told through narration, a voice will describe the action taking place on the screen. While, Informational, illustrative, and instructive voiceovers are used in non-narration. Regardless of the format, a quality voice-over should always have audio clarity, timing, vocal tone and accent, and appropriate pronunciation.

IMPORTANCE of Voiceover:

Voiceover in films is already quite popular because of the increasing popularity of streaming services, but it is equally important for businesses today. For marketing and corporate audiovisuals to reach a wider audience, it is important for them to be localised (read this if you want to try to voice over a video yourself). Today, I wanted to respond to a common query from clients: How significant is the voiceover in videos? A voiceover is not necessary for every video, but many videos benefit from having someone narrate the on-screen action. And if your video does include a voice-over, make sure it's done well. This article is focused entirely on it. There is no doubt that a voiceover plays a significant part in the meaning of a video. First, a definition and detailed explanation of "voice-over" is required. A narration that plays over a video is known as a voice-over.

The main characteristic of this technique is that the voice is added to the existing narrative. It is often read by an actor from a script. A strong video narration has the capability of impacting the overall experience of viewers and altering the tone of the video. It is a way to convey the story in words while the on-screen graphics perform the majority of the heavy lifting in terms of storytelling. You should pick your voice-over artist carefully if you want your video to be compelling, powerful, and create a lasting impression on your viewer because the story that is delivered in it is so crucial. Let's go over several justifications for choosing a skilled voice-over performer.

8 CATEGORIES of Voiceover:

1) Lip Syncing

Let us start with something that is my favorite and the one I utilize the most as an animator, which is 'Lip-Syncing'. It is one of the most popular methods of dubbing, where the voice of the original actor on screen is replaced with that of another performer, lip-syncing. Since the final video needs to feel very natural, lip-syncing needs to be fluent and more difficult. Like I said, both 2D and 3D animators also make use of this voiceover, to sync their characters' mouths with what the artist is saying. Animators create a character's mouth chart with each alphabet having its mouth and then, they figure out where each will be drawn or placed according to what style and software we are using.

2) Dubbing

For off-screen narration and over sound, dubbing voice-over is primarily used in factual programming. This method is less expensive because it does not require the same level of accuracy and complicated production as lip-syncing, as mentioned above. This is a wonderful example of dubbing that demonstrates how professional dubbing may increase the accessibility of a foreign-language video to new viewers. For example, dubbing Anime in the English language helps Japanese animators to make their work understandable to a wide audience across the Earth.

3) ADR {Automated Dialogue Replacement}

Re-recording audio in a more controlled and calm environment is known as automated dialogue replacement, and ADR for short. Automated dialogue replacement is a method of enhancing the audio quality or reflecting changes in dialogue and performance that are often recorded in a post-production studio. In the early days of audio replacement ADR, commonly referred to as "looping," a section of the movie was repeatedly looped to enable the actor to precisely match and sync their performance from the set. The "automated" portion of automated dialogue replacement refers to the fact that the actual "looping" now takes place on a computer. But your performance is still entirely up to you guys.

4) Cartoons

When the word "Voice Actor" is mentioned, this is typically what people picture. The use of hand-drawn or computer-animated animation to tell stories with images is known as cartoons. Animation includes films, television programs, and web series besides the cartoons produced by companies like Disney/Pixar and Nickelodeon. For those wishing to hone their voice acting skills, YouTube has spawned an entire world of independent animation that is an excellent resource. This sort of voiceover is also used for story-time animation that is found on YouTube channels.

5) Commercial

The percentage of voice actors who work on television ads, according to Edge Studio, is around 8%. Even while it makes up a very small portion of the sector, it often offers the highest profits. Gaining attraction in this industry increases your chances of being hired for more advertisements, and before long, producers will be familiar with your voice. As the name suggests, it is used for commercial purposes.

6) Corporate

Voice actors are used in business. They provide the voices for training, advertising, and human resources videos. They additionally serve as broadcasters at trade exhibitions. This is used for those information ads, where people have look more sophisticated and formal.

7) Mimicry

Mimicry means copying something or someone else's voice. The art of accurately mimicking another person or thing through voice is called voice mimicry. One of our most distinctive qualities is considered to be the human voice. Nevertheless, skilled voice actors do a fantastic job of passing for others. They also bring back the sounds we identify with various states of mind and settings. Utilizing one's own voice to imitate other sounds is known as voice mimicry. Mimics and imitators can make sounds from both the natural and human worlds in addition to replicating human speech. A professional voice actor could be able to assist you produce content that sets your branding apart from the competition. Here's a detailed explanation of its operation and the reasons it's so fascinating.

Although these terms are frequently used interchangeably, they are not quite the same. A mimic merely duplicates the noises that someone or something else makes. An imitator goes above and above by attempting to capture the full essence. Mimicry may be a part of imitation.
For instance, a copycat trying to sound like Danielle Bregoli would also use her catchphrase, "You can catch me outside, how about that." By repeating these phrases, anyone may achieve the same results, and many people have. The ability of an actor to capture the cadence, pitch, and accent that gave the line its legendary status ultimately makes the difference. It is usually worthwhile to make the extra effort to direct your actors toward this type of performance.

8) Flat

When it comes to announcing work, most of us picture the stereotypical "Radio announcer voice." However, you may not even be aware of the myriad of announcer voices that surround us. From announcements made on the PA {Public Address} systems of New York City subway cars warning riders to "Stand clear of the closing doors" to those made at conference centers and theaters, to the fictitious voice ordering people to put their phones away. All in all, this voice-over has no expressions or any exaggerations, rather it is said in a basic, ordinary voice, as if a person is bored.

More TYPES of Voiceover:

1) Story-Time Narration

When a voice narrates over visuals or moving photos to help tell the story from a character's perspective or from a third party, this is known as story-time narrated voice-over. Think about Bear Grylls-narrated documentary on Man in the Wild [You know, "Drink your own piss, man"]. Most shows on the networks The History Channel, Discovery, Animal Planet and National Geographic use narration.

2) Audio Books

Despite being present for almost a century, audiobooks have recently risen to become among the most widely used types of entertainment. Voice actors now have a wealth of options to succeed thanks to firms like Libvox [Free domain audio-books] and Audible with its ACX division for self-publishing authors. Although a few authors will narrate their books and many famous people contribute their voices to well-known works, the majority of audiobooks are recorded by professional voice actors who perform various roles by themselves, often even out of their home studio.

3) Interactive/Game Recording

One of the biggest industries worldwide is the video gaming sector, even greater than Hollywood. Video games have given voice actors a ton of options to earn money because of their popularity and media attention. There are countless possibilities, ranging from mobile and PC games to games on home consoles like Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch and AR [Augmented Reality]/VR [Virtual Reality]. When not properly trained, playing video games may put a lot of strain on the voice, as it frequently involves shouting, falling, getting hit, and other strenuous actions. Actors occasionally double as both the body movement, model, and voice actor for characters in video games because these games use motion capture and motion performance.

4) E-Learning {Electronic Learning}

Electronic learning {E-Learning} is given its importance, mainly after the catastrophe; that was Coronavirus 2019. But just like in audio books, you need someone to record the lectures, whether you watch on an E-learning website or YouTube/Tiktok. Many professionals excel in the voice-over sector of e-learning. Working with educational and instructional content that benefits students of all ages is a frequent part of voice actors' e-learning experiences. The voice-overs for instructional material that are recorded for e-learning can be used in websites, mobile apps, and even classrooms. The labor involved can range from giving word pronunciations, conducting historical research, or even narrating learning games.

5) Trailer/Promo

A WORLD. All people who work in the trailer industry are familiar with this saying. Trailers are teasers for various types of content that give the audience an idea of what the full-length program will be about. Trailers, which were formerly dominated by the "deep male voice," are now starting to represent the category's much-needed variety. Any genre, including comedies, dramas, and documentaries, can be touched upon in a trailer.

Promos are commercials that are meant to advertise particular episodes or interstitial portions. A promo is exactly what you think of when you hear the phrases "Coming up next" or "Next Friday at 8 p.m." Many networks utilize advertisements that include voices that are appropriate for the audience the program is promoting. Promos used to be mostly used on television, but more lately, networks are using them to fill their
YouTube channels, which has resulted in a major increase in the amount of work available to voice actors.

6) Visual Assistants/GPS

"What's the weather like today?" Hi Bixby. Hey Siri, "Start a 10-minute countdown". Since Visual Assistants and GPS started communicating with us years ago, virtual assistants and GPS systems will continue to do so. Voice actors with resonant, simple-to-understand tones may want to think about working in the GPS and virtual aid industries.

7) Educational Videos

Voice acting opportunities abound in both the corporate and educational sectors, albeit perhaps not as obviously glamorously as when playing an animated character. There are a variety of tools available, including instructional videos for human resources and university courses. Voice actors should generally maintain a professional demeanor and avoid taking unnecessary chances while discussing topics like workplace conduct, employment opportunities, and more.

8) Health/Wellness

Exercise, meditation, and inspiration are a rapidly expanding category of voice-over work. A voice artist with an upbeat, soothing tone is a great fit for films, apps, and recordings. To determine whether you are reading too quickly, slowly, or just right, read the text from the perspective of the consumer.

9) Biography/Autobiography

By narrating the lives of politicians and celebrities, voice actors in the biography genre perform labor akin to that in narration. By telling the stories of the people they portray, they can succeed as biographical movies.

10) Internet

To describe their products and how to utilize their websites, business owners are now looking for voice actors. Videos with voice-overs are produced for banner commercials, online tutorials, and website tours.

11) Film

Some films are not biographies, but they still want a voice-over to explain what is going on in the scenes. Voice-over artists can have a large or small part in these films.

ACTIVITY 1.1

This is only for those who know the basics of video editing software. Download a video from YouTube with different characters, and remove the audio in an editing software like Di Vinci. Then, give each character a different sound. It can be a cartoon, it can be news, it can be a real-life scene, or anything you wish.
